How the 90/180 Rule Works

The Schengen rule is based on a rolling 180-day period. On any day you are in the Schengen Area, you look back at the previous 180 days and count how many of those days were spent inside Schengen.

You may generally spend up to 90 days within that rolling period.

A few important points:

  • Arrival days count.

  • Departure days count.

  • The 180-day window moves forward every day.

  • Leaving Schengen does not automatically reset your 90 days.

  • Older Schengen days gradually fall out of the 180-day window over time.
