Special note for Canadians: Canada is not currently on Armenia's standard visa-free nationality list. However, Armenia has a temporary exemption in effect from July 1, 2026 through July 1, 2027 for Canadian citizens—and nationals of numerous other countries—who hold a qualifying physical residence permit valid for at least six months from the U.S., EU/Schengen or specified Gulf states. Qualifying travelers can stay visa-free for up to 180 days within a one-year period. Canadians who don't qualify should check Armenia's official visa portal before travel.

Best for city life, restaurants and everyday conveniences. Armenia's capital offers cafés, restaurants, supermarkets, shopping, healthcare, museums and a lively pedestrian center. It is by far the easiest base for a first extended stay in Armenia.
Dilijan
Best for forests, mountains and a slower pace. Sometimes described as Armenia's resort town, Dilijan offers hiking, traditional architecture and easy access to monasteries and Dilijan National Park.
Gyumri
Best for history, architecture and affordability. Armenia's second-largest city has distinctive nineteenth-century architecture, an emerging café and arts scene and generally lower costs than Yerevan.

Healthcare — Private hospitals, medical centers, clinics and pharmacies are readily available in Yerevan. Travelers should carry appropriate travel or international health insurance.
Money — Armenia uses the Armenian dram (AMD). Cards are widely accepted in Yerevan and larger businesses, but carrying some local cash is useful in smaller towns and rural areas.
Mobile & Internet — Local SIM cards, mobile data and broadband internet are widely available and generally affordable, making Armenia practical for longer stays and remote work.
Language — Armenian is the official language and uses its own alphabet. Russian is also widely understood, while English is increasingly common among younger Armenians and in tourism-oriented businesses.
Everyday Living — Yerevan provides supermarkets, pharmacies, gyms, cafés, restaurants, shopping centers and virtually everything required for an extended stay.
Safety — Normal travel precautions apply. Armenia's regional security situation requires additional awareness, particularly around international border areas. Check current government travel advisories before planning excursions near sensitive areas.

Important: The Schengen rule is based on a rolling 180-day period. Simply spending 90 days outside Schengen does not automatically guarantee that you have another full 90 days available. Your exact entry and exit dates matter.
